From homestead to town

David Hoover establishes a homestead
David Hoover acquired property in the area on January 27, 1824. His home soon became a center of early Boone County civic life.

County business gathers here
The first county election and an early probate court were held at Hoover’s house. Boone County’s first marriage license followed in January 1831.

The railroad shapes a new village
William Zion promoted a station along the Lafayette and Indianapolis Railroad. Elijah Cross and surveyor Benjamin Mullikin prepared the town plan dated November 5, 1851.

Zionsville enters the record
The original plat was filed on January 26. Cross first chose “Zion’s Village” in honor of William Zion; the name became Zionsville.
